Lights, Camera, Action! K-12 ICT Film Project

Project Outline:
As the screen is replacing the book as the dominant medium for communication (Kress 2003) students in the 21st Century need to be critically literate in using and creating multi-modal texts which incorporate written, spoken, aural, visual and spatial channels of communication.  This deep knowledge and understanding is essential to function effectively in our society.  It is also a mandatory requirement of the English K-6 and 7-10 syllabuses.

School teams will develop, implement, evaluate and share a unit of work which investigates multimodal texts as a construct and explores how meaning is created in these texts.  Students will then engage in creating their own digital story (2 to 5 minute short film) which may be screened at the culminating film festival.  As a part of this project, teachers will learn all aspects of film production including script writing, storyboarding, essential camera techniques, computer generated music composition, digital video editing and creating a DVD.

Target Audience: A team of between 3 and 5 teachers (K-12) including at least one executive staff member per team.

Regional Support: Teams will be supported by regional consultants through the above-mentioned workshops and in-school consultancy support.

Requirements: The nominated school team, led by the participating executive staff member, will be responsible for the planning and implementation of the project, collection and interpretation of data and dissemination of information about the project to the school community.  The team must be committed to attend on-site and off-site professional learning days and planning meetings and may be called upon to present at relevant regional conferences.

Schools will need to supply at least one DV digital video camera with mini DV tape, fire wire cable and external hard drive with a minimum 20 GB free disk space.  It is recommended that PC schools’ computers have a minimum 2 Gigs RAM and a fire wire port.  This is the equivalent of the 1.25 and 1.5 unit T4L 2007 machines.  For details see https://detwww.det.nsw.edu.au/t4l/equipinfo.htm

Participating teachers will be trained in using the video editing software that comes installed on all T4L rollout computers (Windows MovieMaker or Apple iMovie) in order to implement their unit of work.
