K-12 ICT Support Workshops

Term 3 Workshops

ICT Professional development and support is available to all teachers K-12 in the South Western Sydney region. The following workshops provide opportunities for teachers to increase confidence using a range of ICTs, aligned to the curriculum, to engage and challenge students.

Integrating ICT in PDHPE 7-12

Learn what ICT tools are useful for teaching PDHPE to enhance teaching and learning. A practical, hands-on workshop to develop strategies for classroom integration using these applications to engage students and enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum. Strategies for classroom integration are discussed and resources are provided to help your students create digital content. This software tools are web-based or installed on, or available for T4L desktop computers.
Participants will learn to:

  • Use bookmarking tools such as Diigo to collaboratively share with teachers and students.
  • Use online collaboration tools such as PrimaryPad to collaboratively share with teachers and students.
  • Create multimedia posters such as Glogster.
  • Use Excel to create graphs for statistics.
  • Explore useful websites and Web 2.0 tools specifically designed for PDHPE.
  • Create software demonstrations and quizzes using Captivate.
  • Discuss strategies for classroom integration.

Course Title: Engaging K-6 Students in Mathematics through ICT

ICT is included in the outcomes and content of all syllabuses K-10 and a range of opportunities exist within the teaching and learning of mathematics to effectively utilise ICT to enhance learning outcomes and engage students in Mathematics.
Participants will learn to:

  • Use Google Earth to consolidate Maths concepts such as perimeter, 2D and 3D shapes
  • Create digital slideshows that show understanding of outcomes taught across different Mathematics strands using Photostory
  • Create mathematical story problems using Comic Life
  • Investigate a variety of free open source online applications
  • Graph data using Excel
  • Create mathematical representations using Microsoft drawing tools
  • Discuss and develop strategies for classroom integration

Strategies for classroom integration are discussed and resources are provided to help your students create digital content. This software is web-based and installed on T4L desktop computers.
Participants will learn to:

  • Create authentic tasks using the following applications to improve numeracy in any KLA.
  • Creating diagrams and timelines using Dia.
  • Numeracy skills and ideas using Google Earth.
  • Numeracy skills and ideas using Google Sketchup.
  • Create software demonstrations and quizzes using Captivate.
  • Explore useful websites and Web 2.0 tools specifically designed for Numeracy.
  • Discuss strategies for classroom integration.

Podcasting and Vodcasting (Windows)

This workshop will teach the skills required to integrate podcasts and vodcasts into the curriculum.  Strategies for classroom integration are discussed and resources are provided to help students publish digital content and enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum.

Participants will learn to:

  • Learn to use Audacity to create podcasts and manipulate audio files.
  • Create a vodcast using Microsoft Photostory.
  • Investigate a variety of free open source online applications to create vodcasts.
  • View student examples and develop strategies for classroom integration.

Creating Student Digital Portfolios using Adobe Acrobat Pro

This workshop will enable teachers to have the skills to use Adobe Acrobat Pro in the classroom as well as provide authentic and meaningful tasks for students. Strategies for classroom integration will be provided as well as resources or further use. This workshop provides the skills for teachers and students to create professional looking documents using software installed in T4L computers and DER laptops.

Participants will learn to:
Use Adobe Acrobat 9 to create authentic tasks for students in the classroom by:

  • Creating Portfolios and PDFs.
  • Adding comments and markups, inserting sound and video files.
  • Adding Security Permissions.
  • Creating Interactive Forms.
  • Create software demonstrations and quizzes using Captivate.
  • Discuss strategies for classroom integration.

Web 2.0 applications for enhancing Literacy K-12

Web 2.0 describes the evolution of the Internet, which now provides users with applications that facilitate globally connected, social interactions. No longer are Internet users simply passive consumers of information as Web 2.0 allows the active, simple creation of information.

Learn how to integrate a variety of Web 2.0 applications suitable for online collaboration, digital storytelling, digital presentations, mind mapping and blogging to enhance literacy in teaching and learning. 

Participants will learn to:

  • Use online collaboration tools (Google Docs and Linoit) to contribute to a joint teaching resource to enhance student literacy and support teaching and learning;
  • Use a variety of digital storytelling web tools (StoryBird, Animoto, PhotoPeach and Glogster) to create collaborative online texts;
  • Create digital presentations using Prezi or Voicethread;
  • Develop mind mapping skills using Popplet and Bubbl.us;
  • Create a class blog using BlogEd

  • Participants must sign up for a Google Account at www.google.com.au and bring log in details to the workshop (This must be done prior to attending this workshop as the creation of Google accounts is blocked inside the DET network).
  • Participants must have access to BlogEd on their DET Portal (Principals must authorize BlogEd access through AMU 24 hours prior to attending the workshop as this is essential for participation in the BlogEd session)
  • Bring a selection of images suitable for use in a variety of online applications
  • Bring a thumb drive (min. 2Gb memory) to save work
