K-12 ICT Support Workshops

Term 3 Workshops

ICT Professional development and support is available to all teachers and executive K-12 in the South Western Sydney Region. The following workshops provide opportunities for teachers to increase confidence using a range of ICTs, aligned to the curriculum, to engage and challenge students.

Introduction to Moodle

Moodle is an open source web application that educators use to create online learning environments. This workshop provides an overview of Moodle and how it can be used to enhance teaching and learning.

Participants will learn to:

  • Learn how to upload resources to Moodle
  • Learn the steps to save and restore Moodle courses
  • Investigate how Moodle facilitates learning in accordance with the NSW Quality Teaching Framework
  • Investigate the development of Moodle resources referencing Blooms Digital Taxonomy

Introduction to Windows 7, Office 2007 and Microsoft OneNote

Develop familiarity and confidence using Windows 7 and Office 2007, including Microsoft OneNote, in order to use the software in integrating DER laptops into the curriculum. Note: Windows 7 will be installed on all new NSW DET T4L late 2010.  Suitable for Digital Education Revolution laptops and T4L computers.

Participants will learn to:

  • Navigate and use new features of the Windows 7 Desktop
  • Find and organise information in Windows 7
  • Develop familiarity with and use basic features of the Windows 2007 Office suite
  • Use Microsoft OneNote to organise notes and ideas and integrate the use of OneNote into curriculum programming.
  • Access DET exclusive online training resources.

New Software Tools for Presenting and Organising Information

Many new software tools are available to staff and students at NSW DET schools. Teachers will learn how to utilize these powerful tools to increase communication with and feedback to students, assist students to digitally organise their class work using Microsoft OneNote and organise teaching resources and present information using Adobe Acrobat Pro Portfolios. Teachers will explore where to find tutorials and support for these software programs.

Workshop Content:
Teachers will learn to:

  • Create a OneNote Notebook to support a unit of work, embedding digital resources and areas for student responses in digital formats.
  • Assist students to organise notes using Microsoft OneNote
  • Improve administration efficiency using Microsoft OneNote
  • Present and organise information with electronic portfolios
  • Increase communication with and feedback to students digitally
  • Develop strategies for classroom integration
  • Tutorials and resources provided

New Software Tools for the K-6 Classroom

Learn how easy it is to integrate these new software applications available now on all T4L rollout computers. We will investigate the authentic use of Google Earth, Microsoft OneNote, Dia and Freemind to engage students and enhance teaching and learning across the Primary curriculum.

Participants will learn to:

  • Use Google Earth to create narrated tours; consolidate Maths concepts such as perimeter, 2D and 3D shapes; investigate other tools such as maps, historical imagery and Earth, Sky and other Planets
  • Use Microsoft OneNote to create student digital notebooks for each KLA 

  • Create mind maps using Freemind to organise information and create visual summaries for revision.
  • Easily draw many different types of diagrams such as flow charts and timelines using Dia
  • Discuss and develop strategies for classroom integration

Video Editing with Adobe Premiere Elements in the classroom for beginners

Learn how easy it is to integrate this software tool into the curriculum. Strategies for classroom integration are discussed and resources are provided to help your students create digital content. Suitable for Digital Education Revolution laptops and T4L computers.

Participants will learn to:

  • Create a movie using Adobe Premiere Elements software available on Digital Education Revolution Laptops.  This software is also available for installation on T4L computers.
  • View examples of movies produced by students to communicate their understanding of curriculum concepts in a digital format.
  • Develop strategies for classroom implementation including pre-production planning, scripting and storyboarding.
  • Access online training resources.

Podcasting and Vodcasting (Windows)

Learn how easy it is to integrate these Web 2.0 tools into the curriculum. Strategies for classroom integration are discussed and resources are provided to help your students publish digital content.

Participants will learn to:

  • Create a podcast and a vodcast using techniques and tools available at your school on T4L Windows computers and the DER NSW laptops.
  • Create a vodcast using Microsoft Photo Story and learn to use Audacity to create podcasts and manipulate audio files.
  • View several examples of podcasts and vodcasts produced by students to communicate their 
understanding of curriculum concepts in a digital format.
  • Develop strategies for classroom implementation including pre-production planning, scripting and 
storyboarding.

Core Web 2.0 Tools for the Classroom – Wikis, Blogs and Podcasts

Web 2.0 is a term used to describe the evolution of the Internet, which now provides users with applications that facilitate globally connected, social interactions. No longer are Internet users simply passive consumers of information as Web 2.0 allows the active, simple creation of information.  This workshop will teach the skills required to integrate wikis, blogs and podcasts into the curriculum.  Strategies for classroom integration are discussed and resources are provided to help students publish digital content.

Participants will learn to:

  • Create an online classroom web page using Wikispaces
  • Create a class blog using BlogED
  • Create a podcast using Audacity to add narration, music loops and sound effects
  • Discuss and develop strategies for classroom integration

Digital Storytelling

“Digital Storytelling is the modern expression of the ancient art of storytelling. Digital stories derive their power by weaving images, music, narrative and voice together, thereby giving deep dimension and vivid color to characters, situations, experiences, and insights. Tell your story now digitally.”

This workshop aims to teach participants the essential skills in Microsoft PhotoStory and Comic Life and investigate a variety of Web 2.0 applications including Storybird and Xtranormal to enhance teaching and learning.  Participants will develop strategies for classroom integration using these applications to engage students and enhance teaching and learning across the curriculum.

Participants will learn to:

  • Use Photostory to create a photo slideshow using digital photos with special effects, narration and music
  • Use Comic Life to create a comic strip using images and text
  • Create short 3D animated movies from simple text-based movie-scripts using Xtranormal.
  • Develop collaborative digital stories with students using Storybird
  • Discuss and develop strategies for classroom integration

New Software Tools for Teaching and Learning

Many new applications are now available to schools. Learn to use the following three applications to enhance teaching and learning: Google SketchUp (a 3D modelling tool), Microsoft OneNote (an electronic note organiser) and Freemind (a mind map tool).

Workshop Content:

  • Learn the basics of Google SketchUp.
  • Create 
2D and 3D drawings and view several samples of SketchUp drawings produced by students. 

  • Learn techniques to use Google SketchUp to consolidate mathematical concepts such as 
area, perimeter and 3D shapes.
  • Use Microsoft OneNote to organise resources for a unit of work and learn how students will use OneNote as the exercise book of the future. 
Several sample Notebooks are provided.

DER Laptop Tools for the Mathematics Classroom

Learn how to incorporate selected DER laptop software into your classroom activities. This course will cover tools such as Smart Notebook 10, GeoGebra and Google SketchUp and focus on developing both teacher familiarity and encouraging creation of student centred activities so students can express their understanding of concepts using the selected software.

Participants will learn to:

  • Use Smart Notebook 10 to create a variety of Learning resources, access pre-prepared resources for Maths and use these tools for student centred learning.
  • Use GeoGebra to create simple dynamic worksheets as well as incorporating how to use the applets effectively in the mathematics classroom.
  • Use Google SketchUp to draw and render 3D shapes and use it to facilitate calculation of surface area and volume.

Engaging K-6 Students in Mathematics through ICT

ICT is included in the outcomes and content of all syllabuses K-10 and a range of opportunities exist within the teaching and learning of mathematics to effectively utilise ICT to enhance learning outcomes and engage students in Mathematics.
Participants will learn to:

  • Use Google Earth to consolidate Maths concepts such as perimeter, 2D and 3D shapes
  • Create digital slideshows that show understanding of outcomes taught across different  Mathematics strands using Photostory
  • Create mathematical story problems using Comic Life
  • Investigate a variety of  free open source online applications
  • Graph data using Excel
  • Create mathematical representations using Microsoft drawing tools
  • Discuss and develop strategies for classroom integration

  • Registrations will only be accepted online through MyPL@DET which is accessed through your DET Portal under the My Applications tab. For those without portal access you can access the Direct link to My PL@DET.
  • Select “Govt School Direct Debit” as the payment method as costs are directly debited from schools TPL account.
  • An email will be sent to you confirming your application and an email will also be sent to your principal.

  • Please notify non-attendance or school will be charged. Minimum numbers are required for workshops to proceed.

The DET is a NSW Institute of Teachers endorsed provider of professional development for the maintenance of accreditation at Professional Competence.
